We support the petition by Midlands Hindu Society for the Msunduzi Municipality to urgently restore the Crematorium. We are deeply disappointed with the current lack of local cremation services. This service was established by the Hindu Community for whom cremation is a significant part of their religious rites and handed over to the Municipality for the benefit of all the citizens without discrimination. Over the past 12 years, Midlands Hindu Society has engaged with the Msunduzi Municipality to maintain the crematorium services and once again we have been denied this basic human right by our municipality.
The discontinuation of this service has caused distress and inconvenience for many families who wish to bid farewell to their loved ones at home. The absence of local cremation services forces us to travel long distances at great expense during an already difficult time.
The Msunduzi Municipality clearly has funds, if it can afford to sponsor a soccer team with R27 million over 3 years but, can’t spend less than R 1 million to restore an essential crematorium service to its ratepayers.
We support the call by Midlands Hindu Society for the Msunduzi Municipality to recognize and respect our human rights as citizens and restore the local cremation services in Pietermaritzburg immediately. This is not only an essential service; it’s about preserving human dignity, respecting cultural and religious practices, and upholding human rights.
Please sign this petition if you believe that the Msunduzi Municipality should urgently restore this essential service for all the residents of Pietermaritzburg and the greater Midlands Region.
