This was all part of International Yoga Day that is widely commemorated on the Sunday after June 21 across different countries. During the morning session, a group of locals shrugged off the cold by immersing in various body postures and breathing techniques instructed by physiotherapist Omesh Somaroo.
Consulate General of India (Durban), Naresh Batra, hailed the Midlands Hindu Society for what he deemed as a “wonderful” programme. “I would like to commend and express my sincere gratitude to the organisers.”
He said he hoped a programme of this stature would go a long way in propagating what Mahatma Gandhi stood for. “This is also quite relevant as we are doing this in Pietermaritzburg – a place that is synonymous with Gandhi’s struggle,” he said.
His sentiments were also echoed by Msunduzi Mayor Themba Njilo who took part in the programme, saying he was honoured to have been involved.
He said he was thrilled to have connected his mind through meditation. Njilo said often people believed that to be fit one has to take up a gym membership “This is contrary to the point. A simple jog and a walk can do a lot of good to your health,” said Njilo.
