1860 Commemoration of the Arrival of Indentured Indians to SA

The 1860 Arrival of Indentured Indians Commemoration was held at the Msunduzi Museum on Monday evening 16th November by the Midlands Hindu Society. Interfaith prayers from Hindus, Muslims and Christians were held and various Indian organisations in Pietermaritzburg that are over a century old were honoured.
Mayor Mzi Thebolla was the chief guest who who had a few words in honour of South Africans of Indian Origin who are descendents of Indentured Indians who arrived in South Africa from 16 November 1860
The following century old organizations were recognized for their service to the community and where presented with shawls of honour: Siva Soobramanim and Mariamen Temple (Big Temple) which is 135 years old, The Parish of St Pauls which is 126 years old, Surti Sooni Musjid (Top Mosque) 122 years old, Hindu Young Mens Association, 120 years old, Sri Vishnu Temple which is 113 years old, Veda Dharma Sabha and the Habibia Soofie Masjid (East Street) both are 111years old and formed the nucleus of the community as they came out of indentured into a free South Africa
