Midlands Hindu Society in association with the Swami Vivekananda Cultural Centre and the Department of Arts and Culture together with Mr & Mrs Naicker had pleasure in presenting the debut Kuchipudi dance recital of returning Kolkata dance graduate, Shanese Naicker.

Shanese a young, enthusiastic and determined young lady who after completing her matric at the Kharina Secondary School in 2014, applied for the bursary scheme offered by the government of India through the Indian Council for Cultural Relations under which interested and qualifying students can obtain a full bursary to study in India.

Kuchipudi is a harmonious combination of pure classical dance. It is rhythmic, bright, vivacious and full of beauty and grace with narrative moments based on the Hindu mythology. Traditionally a performance is accompanied by a live orchestra comprising of singing, flute, violin and percussions. Today Kuchipudi occupies a privileged position amongst other Indian classical dance styles

Midlands Hindu Society, which has facilitated the programme with the ICCR in Pietermaritzburg, is proud to be associated with Shanese Naicker who saw the opportunity to realise her dream of studying Kuchipudi abroad and successfully applied for the bursary. After spending 3 years at the Rabindra Bharati University in Kolkata under the tutorship of Dr Madhuri Majumdar, Shanese successfully completed her studies and graduated with a B.A Degree in Dance.
There aren’t many Kuchipudi dancers in South Africa and to the delight of dance enthusiasts, particularly Kuchipudi enthusiasts, this dance form can now be learnt in Pietermaritzburg. Shanese, a vibrant dancer whose passion for the arts is clearly visible in her performances. She also a Bharatnatyam dancer and has training in various other dance styles.
